Why Americans Are Still Fat

It is dumbfounding how the obesity epidemic has gotten worse over the past few years. Conservative estimates point to 70% of Americans being overweight. With a huge portion of this 70% are obese. With all the books and diet foods out one must begin to wonder why America is going nowhere fast.

This article discusses four reasons why Americans remain as fat as ever. Some of it may shock the reader but the truth needs to get out. Read on to find out the reasons why waist lines are not getting smaller.

Information Overload

There is simply too much information out there that is an arm’s reach of anyone who has ever thought of losing weight. Some bookstores have entire sections devoted to one type of dieting fad: Mediterranean or South Beach Type diets.

More choices on diet confuse people especially when those diets offer conflicting advice. Often you hear people arguing about what they read on their diet books about carbohydrates or fat or whatever their diet books says is right or not.

As with everything else in the world today everyone could benefit from drastically reducing the number of choices for people. Perhaps the FDA could issue three recommended diets for a certain type of profile. Or better yet diet books should go through the FDA to determine its viability as a weight reduction guide. This way we’ll have less books and information on the market that will confuse people.

Lack of Patience

Probably the second most reason why Americans have failed in reducing their waist lines is the lack of patience. Most people cannot even devote themselves religiously to following a very short 12-week program. They’d rather try the latest Seven Day Hollywood diet program then jump on the next short term fasting program on the market.

Any drastic change in your body that is sustainable will take at least 12 months to really set in. A life time of undisciplined eating and health neglect cannot be erased in a matter of weeks. People need to be informed about lifestyle changes rather than quick bursts of dieting to reduce weight.

Ultimately, dieting in weekly periods will only make a dieter gain weight in the long term. Patience and the acceptance that there are no overnight transformations is the key in losing fat.

Diet Fads

As mentioned in information overload above, diets have become “faddish.” New diets come and go like seasonal fashion wear. If you’ve been following the dieter’s fad for a reasonably longer period of time you will start noticing that it is not much different than fashion. New diets are rehashed versions of the old ones. So just like fashion diets come and go but they do just recycle themselves time and time again.

Multi-billion Dollar Lie

The fact is that the diet weight loss industry is a billion dollar industry. And some experts claim that its dollars before people. If everyone was fit and healthy that would mean the absence of this humungous chunk of money.

To give you a very simple example let’s take a look at bookstores. Bookstores are in the interest of selling as much books as possible. If they could sell one desperate dieter 10 books within a 5 year period it would be good for them. However if they sold only one effective book which worked for a dieter for years and years to come that would mean a profit of ten times less.

This is of course is not saying that bookstores want people fat. But the whole industry in general benefits from the obesity epidemic. If businessmen had their way they would want 100% of the population to get fat. More fat people buying false promises and the latest fat loss products is good business.

In the end people need to take responsibility for their health. Right now everyone practically knows how to lose weight. And the truth is anyone who lives a typical American life has the odds stacked against them. The world wants you fat. Fat people give unlimited profits to the right kinds of businesses.

Educate yourself and take responsibility in trying to lose weight. Knowing some of the reasons mentioned above will help you realize that it takes more will power to lose weight. Hopefully this piece will further enhance your commitment to living a healthier lifestyle amidst a fat-happy world.
